Debunking a Pro Abortion Video

ree

I often have the honor of dissecting arguments of the opposing side whenever President Elizabeth sends me some pop pro abortion vids

This particular TikTok video was very interesting. It's one of those arguments where you know that they're wrong, It's just so hard to explain why. Like any skill, It's something that takes practice

One of my favorite ways to analyze this sort of media goes as follows, and can also be applied to many other things

  1. Watch the video all the way through without stopping. Try to understand what the person is trying to get across: the main idea

  2. Write down everything that stuck out to you on the first go, and any questions you have

  3. Watch the video again. Pause and write down the actual arguments used and note any logical fallacies

  4. Maybe watch it again or a couple times to get a firm grasp at the perspective of the person speaking

  5. Take a look at your notes and utterly debunk the argument- or change your mind

Note-

It is extremely important to fully understand someone's position before debunking it, or else you have the chance of creating a strawman. Nobody wants to be misrepresented. Make sure you do so with humility and empathy

Okay, here's the long awaited screen-recorded TikTok video

From what I observed, this is the underlying idea:

Rape is evil because it uses a person's body without consent and against their will. The fetus is using the woman's body without consent and against their will, and therefore abortion is necessary and should be legal

This is essentially a varied version of the violinist argument. This argument was a thought experiment constructed by Judith Jarvis Thompson in her book A Defense of Abortion. There is an amazing video of Stephanie Grey Connors explaining this "violinist" argument and her way of debunking it

But as for this specific video, there are 5 points/thoughts I wanted to share

1. The lady said that the fetus uses the mother's body against her will/ without her consent. This assumption is the first flaw in her argument.

In most cases of pregnancy, the act of having sex is the consent. Even with precautions such as birth control, there is an accepted risk of becoming pregnant. That is one of the things God designed sex for: making babies.

2. As an objective moral truth, parents should take care of their children and not hurt them. The U.S. has laws put in place to protect children from harm of their parents, if applicable (except in the case of abortion). By being a parent, the first priority has shifted from taking care solely of yourself, to taking care of your child.

When does someone become a parent? When they have offspring. This happens the moment a new human is conceived. So, according to the nature of this relationship, the parents are morally required to see to that the child is taken care of and not hurt- certainly not starved to death, ripped apart, or given induced cardiac arrest.

3. This scenario equates Pregnancy with the rape. Pregnancy can be really hard sometimes, but it should not in any way be compared to rape. Rape is inherently evil: a stronger person intentionally and violently forcing themselves on a weaker person for their own selfish desires.

Pregnancy is not evil. Pregnancy, no matter how conceived, is a beautiful God-designed process. Rape and pregnancy are not the same thing. Rape is inherently traumatic and violating and evil

If we were to equate rape to anything in this conversation, it should be compared to abortion: a stronger person intentionally and violently killing a weaker person for their own selfish desires

We need to show these women that they don't have to kill their babies to keep on living. We need to surround these women and men with compassion and support. We can lift them up instead of pulling them down into a decision they can never take back

We can do better than abortion

Let's make abortion illegal and unthinkable
